Auburn University Offers New Graduate program - Doctorate in polymer and fiber engineering

Auburn to offer new engineering graduate program

A new doctoral program at Auburn University has been approved by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education. The doctorate in polymer and fiber engineering is the first of its kind in the state, offering graduate students courses and research opportunities in biopolymers, nanomaterials, polymer physics and smart fibers. The department will begin accepting students for the doctoral program this fall.

"The addition of the doctoral degree allows the university to offer students a comprehensive curriculum in polymer and fiber engineering," says Larry Benefield, dean of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. "It is even more fitting that a program whose industry supports a rich tradition and history in Alabama should be the first of its kind here at Auburn."

The Department of Polymer and Fiber Engineering was established as the Department of Textile Engineering in 1929. The department's name and curriculum were changed in 2005 and a master's of science in polymer and fiber engineering was approved in 2006.
