Today's outdoor activitists can select from an abundance of technical apparel made to protect themselves from a variety of hazards associated with an active outdoor lifestyle. Garments made from a variety of safety and protective fabrics can provide a variety of benefits from reducing heat stress, reducing the potential for injuries, to monitoring vital signs. Recent innovations include fibers and yarns that incorporate integrated circuits, LEDs, and solar cells, along with advanced materials that can sense, communicate, store energy, regulate temperature, change color, etc.
As the outdoor market continues to move forward in the development of innovative materials for outdoor garments, several exhibiting companies at ORSM'16, which was held August 3-6, 2016, showcased a variety of technical products made from fabrics that provide an elevated level of protection for use in outdoor environments. The FabricLink Network reviews this composite, as well as other technical products that grabbed the attention of show-goers.
PrimaLoft Performance Fabrics (Pertex / Mitsui) PrimaLoft and Mitsui Bussan Techno Products, parent company of Pertex and specializing in textile research and development, have collaborated in the manufacture of PrimaLoft Performance Fabrics. This collection consists of a broad range of technical knits primarily developed for base layer applications. The fabrics are categorized into Gold and Silver groupings to distinguish each fabric's specific performance and potential end-use. Pertex fabrics showcased its CS10 technology, which has more than twice the abrasion resistance of fabrics made from traditional circular filament yarns. These fabrics are not only highly durable, but also have excellent air circulation, are soft to the touch, and are downproof (tight fabric construction preventing feathers from coming through).
Downlite, a major down and feather processor and supplier of responsibly-sourced performance fills for the outdoor and home furnishings markets, provides high quality natural filling materials for outdoor apparel and sleeping bag applications that keep the user warm, comfortable, and protected from the outdoor elements. At ORSM'16, Downlite announced its response to consumer demands that the brands they wear use environmentally friendly materials that follow sustainable practices. The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) supply chain certification traces the down supply chain in Europe and Asia, ensuring its brands and consumers that Downlite’s down comes from ethically treated geese and ducks.
Cordura® brand , announced the launch of two new fabric innovations designed to enhance protection in outdoor gear and apparel at ORSM'16 – CORDURA® TPX and CORDURA® 4EVER™ Flannel fabrics. "The addition of CORDURA® TPX fabric provides gear with enhanced durability and a waterproof finish, while the new CORDURA® 4EVER™ Flannel fabric is designed with a multi-functional lifestyle in mind – combining abrasion resistance, soft comfort, warmth, and durability for cooler temperatures."
Gehring / Tweave , reported interest in its tactical outdoor, yoga active, and athleisure fabrics at ORSM'16. Mary Reardon, VP Sales & Marketing for Tweave, says that attendee focus centered around two key themes: extreme durability and abrasion resistance. Gehring/Tweave used ORSM'16 to introduce a new 7.5 oz fabric for running shorts and lightweight jackets, which can also be laminated for waterproof-breathable applications. Tweave's 4 oz pant fabric with a soft drape and hand was important for yoga pant applications.
Unifi®, showcased its wide array of specialty performance yarns targeted toward outdoor protection. These yarns include: Mynx™, a sun shield technology with up to +50 UPF that offers a high level of dependable sun screen protection against both UVA and UVB rays; Resist20™, an inherent water resistant technology that minimizes water absorption when the fabric is saturated with water; and Inhibit®, a flame retardant technology that contains a special phosphorus FR chemistry that promotes quick formation of char that reduces the flammable gases emitted and the propensity to burn.Noble Biomaterials, Inc., a global leader in antimicrobial and conductivity solutions for soft surface applications, announced at ORSM'16 that it has established a strategic alliance with ANTA China Ltd. and its wholly owned subsidiaries. ANTA is China's largest sportswear brand based in Fujian. The partnership brings together Noble's XT2® odor management technology with ANTA's performance apparel and footwear products for the ANTA, Fila, Descente and ANTA Kids brands in mainland China. Noble and ANTA have created innovative new fabrics with XT2® technology, designed to eliminate odor in fitness, sport and lifestyle products.
