TECHNICAL TEXTILE TRENDS 2017: Textile Roads Lead to Techtextil North America in Chicago by Kathlyn Swantko

The Historic U. S Route 66, which starts at Chicago and extends to Los Angeles, is known as "America's Highway", or the "Mother Road". This famous highway has become an iconic symbol of a changing America. Looking at the history of Route 66, the evolution of the highway, and the varying phases and tests the road has experienced since it was built in the 1920s, it can be perceived as a synonymous view of the changes and challenges the U.S. textile industry has faced over the last few decades.

Like Route 66, the textile industry has seen both good times and tough times. Through everything, the U.S textile industry has survived, and Techtextil has become the must-attend trade show symbol of the changing times, bringing together all industry segments to discover historic solutions for the future. So, it's only fitting that Chicago is the chosen host city for Techtextil North America 2017, which can signify the start of textile developments yet to be imagined.

At Techtextil North America in Chicago, attendees can expect to discover new products, exciting technologies, ground breaking materials and advancements as exhibitors from around the world showcase their latest innovations in technical textiles and nonwovens. Besides the open tradeshow floor, the 3-day event also offers attendees and exhibitors the opportunity to learn at a variety of thought-inspiring symposiums. Here is a summary of these seminar events.

Day 1 - Tuesday Morning, June 20, 2017: "Smart Textiles in the Connected Car Ecosystem". In this session, the role of Smart Textiles – fabrics with integrated sensors and electronics in car seats, seat belts, interior, etc. – will be explored to further enhance the quality of the driving experience.

Day 1 - Tuesday Afternoon, June 20, 2017: "Optimizing the Design and Fabrication of Functional Fabrics". A critical barrier to technical textile innovation has been the lack of validated design and predictive modeling methods that allow both a designer and an engineer to determine the process parameters needed to manufacture a complex textile that fulfills an application's requirements. The adoption of pre-production visualization and analysis tools are now reshaping design and manufacturing processes, improving precision manufacturing and production time, and helping to minimize waste of materials.

Day 2 - Wednesday Morning, June 21, 2017: "Smart Textile Product Design". This session explores lessons learned in smart textile product designs, particularly adding electronics into wearable and home textiles. Human factors, including sociology and comfort, will be discussed.

Day 2 - Wednesday Afternoon, June 21, 2017: "The Technical Textile Industry Talent Challenge". This session focuses on how educating, recruiting and sourcing the next generation of Technical Textile Technologists affects the textile industry.

Day 3 - Thursday Morning, June 22, 2017:

  • Part 1 of this session will explore the key role that standards and conformity assessment procedures have in enabling global trade products, including the commitments of the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade Agreements, and the reliance on standards by regulators and the market.
  • Part 2 of this session will highlight issues associated with designing, manufacturing, and marketing wearables into the lifestyle and medical sectors, including perspectives on use of standards and risk management.
